Healing Gardens for Sterling Hospital, Rajkot, Gujarat
Proposed within a site area of 5600 sq. m., this 160-bed multi-specialty hospital is going to be another feather in the cap of the Sterling group. Located in a prime area in Rajkot, the proposed project has been designed as a series of compact functional spaces enabling efficient hospital service. The hospital encompasses a 7-storey high Atrium space which will house all public amenities and waiting spaces for the patients/public. The built-up area is 16,500 sq. m.
Simplicity is essential in designing healing gardens to keep the space easy to understand. Many of the people using the gardens are dealing with stress, therefore it was important that the space is simple and does not add any additional stress. The garden designed was to be maintainable both for physical safety and therapeutic benefits. It is especially important that the garden be easy to maintain because a poorly maintained garden could make patients lose confidence that they are being well taken care of by hospital staff. With the shrine being the main focus, the landscape provides pleasant surroundings to produce restorative effects for its users. Mass planting is used to create emphasis within the space around the shrine. This provides focal points to help people orient themselves in the garden. A planting buffer is created between people in the garden and the building.
Plants were strategically chosen that engage all the senses. A variety of textures, scents, colors, as well as plants that make pleasant sounds as wind rustles their leaves were provided within the greens. Providing seasonal interest allows people to connect with the cycle of nature.
